Common Views: Sourcing Water
In 2019-20 Common Views worked in the region of the Israeli desert town of Arad and the nearby Bedouin settlements. The communities that inhabit this area all share a common desert landscape, and yet, there exists between them, in very close geographical proximity, a great disparity, civil inequality and an inequity in the allotment of and access to resources. The artists chose to focus on water as a scarce resource, using the theme to reflect on this distributive imbalance in a hyper-arid region, addressing the social and political in the context of a wider discussion on environment and sustainability. As a framework for the project they incorporated into their vision a grassroots paln to create a Biosphere Reserve in the area, extending this initiative to encompass both the town and the surrounding desert environment and communities. Common Views: Sourcing Water was curated by Dr. Irit Carmon Popper and realized in collaboration with local community members.
