Common Views: Biosphäre Berlin
Die Stadt Berlin umfasst 47 Naturschutzgebiete innerhalb ihrer Grenzen. Die Stadt ist eng mit diesen Ökosystemen und der umgebenden Natur verbunden, und doch besteht in der Wahrnehmung der Menschen eine Trennung zwischen “Biosphäre” und “Stadt”. Das Projekt “Biosphäre Berlin” bietet einen Wahrnehmungswandel, der solche Unterscheidungen in Frage stellt und darauf abzielt, Mensch und Ökosystem wieder zu integrieren.
DAS URBANE BIOSPHÄRE ERLEBNIS
DAS URBANE BIOSPHÄRE ERLEBNIS ist eine stadtteilweite Open-Air-Ausstellung und eine Tour durch die urbane Biosphäre Berlins, die Klang- und Bildkunst, Texte, physische Performances und Pop-up-Events mit öffentlicher Beteiligung vereint.
Die Auftaktveranstaltung, die das Ende der ersten Phase des Biosphäre Berlin Projekts markierte, fand im Berliner Stadtteil Tegel unter Beteiligung der Öffentlichkeit statt, begleitet von Künstler:innen und Forscher:innen des Common Views Kollektiv. Die Open-Air-Ausstellung und die Pop-up-Events fanden an verschiedenen Orten in Tegel und der umliegenden Natur statt.
DAS URBANE BIOSPHÄRE ERLEBNIS präsentiert einige der Forschungs- und kreativen Ergebnisse aus der ersten Phase des Projekts Biosphäre Berlin und kann von der Öffentlichkeit immer noch besucht werden. Während des gesamten Projektverlaufs führte das Kernteam von Biosphere Berlin eine Reihe von Aktivitäten und Veranstaltungen durch. Dazu gehörten Forschungstouren vor Ort, kreative Workshops, partizipative Kunstaktionen und Performances.

Wir beschäftigen uns mit dem urbanen Raum und stellen ihn aus einer sozial-ökologischen Perspektive neu vor. Wir schlagen Berlins Naturschutzgebiete als Kernzonen einer urbanen Biosphäre vor, die als Knotenpunkte eines Netzwerks innerhalb der Stadt dienen. Durch Zusammenarbeit und öffentliche partizipative Kunstaktionen schlagen wir einen neuen Ansatz für die Stadt vor, der Vielfalt, Resilienz, Nachhaltigkeit und Konvivialität fördert.
Wir arbeiten mit Wissenschaftlern der Hochschule für Nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (HNEE) und dem Institut für Biosphärenreservate zusammen und sind im Gespräch mit dem Naturpark Barnim, in Verbindung mit der neuen Initiative Urbane Biosphärenregion Berlin-Barnim.
Ein wichtiges Anliegen unseres Projekts ist es, das Verständnis der Beziehung zwischen Natur und Kultur, zwischen Stadt und Naturlandschaft, zwischen bebauten und wilden Räumen zu erweitern und neu zu überdenken: Die vermeintlichen Gegensätze von “Natur” und “Kultur”, “gewachsen” und “gebaut”, “geplant” und “organisch” werden als potenziell koexistierend und nicht als sich gegenseitig ausschließend betrachtet.
Common Views hat die erste Forschungsphase dieses transdisziplinären Projekts zwischen Oktober 2022 und Februar 2023 im Berliner Bezirk Tegel, Reinickendorf, durchgeführt, um die Beziehung zwischen Bewohner*innen, der Biosphäre und der Stadt zu untersuchen. Das Projekt wurde vom Berliner Projektfonds Urbane Praxis gefördert.

Dan Farberoff
Mitbegründer von Common Views, interdisziplinärer Künstler und Filmemacher, der vor allem mit vermittelter physischer und digitaler Präsenz arbeitet, in ortsspezifischer Weise, sowohl in der Natur als auch in urbanen Umgebungen. Seine Arbeiten umfassen neue Medien, Video, Fotografie, interaktive Technologie, Live-Präsenz und Tanz und berühren Fragen des Bewusstseins und der Verkörperung, der Verbindung zu Ort und Natur.
David Behar Perahia
Mitbegründer von Common Views, Künstler und Forscher, der hauptsächlich mit einem ortsspezifischen Ansatz arbeitet. Seine partizipatorischen Projekte entstehen durch die Zusammenarbeit mit den Menschen und Gemeinschaften an den jeweiligen Orten, wobei er die Öffentlichkeit in verschiedenen Phasen der Entstehung aktiv einbezieht. David gründete das MUNDI_Lab an der Fakultät für Architektur, Technion, IL, und erforscht die Commons in umstrittenen Situationen, Stadtentwicklung, Gentrifizierung und Überwachung.
Sina Ribak
Unabhängige Forscherin, die sich mit Bioökonomie, Landnutzung, Boden, Biodiversität und Solidarität aus einer kritischen Mehr-als-Mensch- und Natur-Kultur-Perspektive beschäftigt. In ihrer Praxis der gemeinsamen Nutzung von Naturen arbeitet sie in einer Vielzahl von Bereichen für soziale und ökologische Gerechtigkeit. Sie ist an translokalen Ökosystemen (Arts Collaboratory, Green Art Lab Alliance) und Kollektiven beteiligt, die darauf abzielen, Paradigmen und Narrative durch gemeinsames Sammeln, Erzählen, Vertrauen, Teilen und Experimentieren zu verändern.
Katja Arzt
Professorin an der Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung in Eberswalde (HNEE), spezialisiert auf nachhaltige Regionalentwicklung und soziale Prozesse. Katja hat den internationalen Masterstudiengang Biosphärenreservats-management (BIOM) an der Hochschule aufgebaut und geleitet. Sie arbeitet außerdem freiberuflich als Moderatorin und Mediatorin, ist Mutter von zwei Kindern und seit 2020 im Netzwerk “Futurewomen” organisiert.
Ka Rustler
Eine Pionierin auf dem Gebiet der Improvisation und des Tanzes und Mitautorin vielschichtiger Produktionen. Ka tritt mit zahlreichen Künstler*innen auf und gestaltet soziale und ökologische Kontexte, die theoretisch im Rahmen eines feministischen Verständnisses von verkörperter Subjektivität angesiedelt sind. Ihre Arbeit basiert auf somatischen Methoden und Systemen, deren Anwendung und Relevanz sie an der Schnittstelle von Performance, Neurowissenschaft und Somatik in natürlichen und urbanen Umgebungen erforscht. Ka ist verheiratet und Mutter von zwei Kindern.
Common Views: Biosphere Berlin
The city of Berlin includes 47 nature conservation areas within its limits. The city is closely linked to these ecosystems and to the surrounding nature, and yet, in people’s perception, there exists a separation between “biosphere” and “city”. The project “Biosphere Berlin” offers a shift in perception that questions such distinctions and aims to reintegrate humans and ecosystem.
THE URBAN BIOSPHERE EXPERIENCE
THE URBAN BIOSPHERE EXPERIENCE is a neighbourhood-wide open air exhibition and tour of Berlin’s urban biosphere, combining sound and visual art, written texts, physical performances, and pop-up events with public participation.
The launch event, which marked the end of the first phase of the Biosphere Berlin Project, took place in Berlin’s Tegel district with broad public participation, accompanied by the artists and researchers from the Common Views collective. The open air exhibition and pop-up events took place in various locations throughout Tegel and the surrounding nature.
Presenting some of the research and creative outcomes from the first phase of the Biosphere Berlin project, THE URBAN BIOSPHERE EXPERIENCE can still be accessed by members of the public, by visiting the various physical locations in Tegel and accessing the online information, sounds and images available at each location, by using links embedded in the interactive map.
About the Biosphere Berlin Project
We engage with urban space and re-imagine it from a social-ecological perspective. We propose Berlin’s nature protection areas as core zones of an urban biosphere, serving as nodes for a network within the city. Through collaboration and public participatory art actions, we propose a new approach to the city that promotes diversity, resilience, sustainability and conviviality.
We are working together with researchers from the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde (HNEE) and the Biosphere Reserves Institute and are in conversation with Naturpark Barnim, in connection with the new Urban Biosphere Region Berlin-Barnim initiative.
An important concern of our project is to broaden and rethink the understanding of the relationship between nature and culture, between city and the natural landscape, between built spaces and wild spaces: the perceived opposites of “nature” and “culture”, “grown” and “built”, “planned” and “organic” are reconsidered as potentially coexisting, and not as mutually exclusive.
Common Views conducted the initial research phase of this trans-disciplinary project, in the Berlin district of Tegel, Reinickendorf, between October 2022 and February 2023, investigating the relationship between residents, the biosphere and the city. The project was funded by the Berliner Projektfonds Urbane Praxis.

Dan Farberoff
Co-founding member of Common Views, interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker, working primarily in mediated physical and digital presence, in site-specific fashion, both in nature and urban environments. His works incorporate new media, video, photography, interactive technology, live presence and dance, and touch on issues of consciousness and embodiment, connection to place and nature.
David Behar Perahia
Co-founding member of Common Views, artist and researcher working mostly within a site-specific approach. His participatory projects evolve through engaging with the people and communities of given locations, establishing an active public participation during various stages of the making. David founded MUNDI_Lab at the Faculty of Architecture, Technion, IL, which researches the Commons in contested situations, spanning urban development, gentrification and surveillance.
Sina Ribak
Independent researcher exploring bioeconomy, land use, soil, biodiversity, and solidarity from a critical more-than-human and naturecultures perspective. In her practice of co-embracing natures, she works across a diversity of fields towards social and ecological justice. She is involved in translocal ecosystems (Arts Collaboratory, Green Art Lab Alliance) and collectives aimed at collaboratively shifting paradigms and narratives through gathering, storytelling, trust, sharing, and experimentation.
Katja Arzt
Professor at the University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde (HNEE), specialising in sustainable regional development and social processes. Katja established and directed the international Master’s programme Biosphere Reserves Management (BIOM) at the University. She also works freelance as a moderator and mediator, is a mother of two children and has been organised in the “Futurewomen” network since 2020.
Ka Rustler
A pioneer in the field of improvisation and dance and co-author of multi-layered productions. Ka performs with numerous artists, framing social and ecological contexts theoretically situated within feminist understandings of embodied subjectivity. Her work derives from somatic methods and systems, exploring their application and relevance at the interface of performance-neuroscience-somatics, in natural and urban environments. Ka is married and mother of two children.
